MightyVine Doubles Down on Hydroponic Tomatoes
So successful has the first few months of hydroponic tomato production in the MightyVine greenhouses just outside of Chicago, MightyVine has announced a doubling in size from 7.5 acres of CEA production to 15. Right now, MightyVine can produce over 2.5 million pounds of hydroponic tomatoes every year in their Rochelle based greenhouses, the expansion will increase that amount to as much as 900,000 pounds each and every month.
Currently supplying several large Chicago area supermarket chains and hundreds of chefs in restaurants across the region, MightyVine’s hydroponic greenhouse operations provide homegrown fresh tomato flavors all year long! They currently offer a very sweet cherry tomato and a larger slicing tomato, but additional varieties are planned along with the expansion. Area chefs not only rave about the flavors, but are super stoked to have vine ripened hydroponic tomatoes for their recipes any time of the year.
There are concerns that the hydroponic tomatoes won’t sell as well when field grown produce is widely available during the typical summer season, however MightyVine is confident enough in the uniqueness of their product offerings that competition will not seriously affect their bottom line.
